Alison Krauss / Robert Plant, "Raising Sand"
As much as Raising Sand is a revelation for the listener,
the artists involved were even more profoundly affected.
"When we got seventy-five percent of the way
down the line," Robert Plant explains, "I
realized we’d created something that I could
never have dreamt of." Alison Krauss shares his
enthusiasm and wonder. "There’s so much
romance in contrast," she summarizes. "It
was a real life-changing experience." A collaboration
between two disparate but equally amazing music giants
has yielded some pretty unexpected musical results,
unexpected even to the artists themselves. And yet
the album coalesces into a collection which sounds
as if it finished itself and dropped out of the sky
and on to the shelves. It maintains the spontaneity
and joy of collaboration and experimentation, with
just enough - and not too much - production polish.
